Addiction Prevention & Treatment (Minor)
This minor complements many academic programs and majors by providing knowledge and experience in the 12 core competency areas identified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMSHA] as vital to knowledge, skills and attitudes required for professional practice in addiction services. In addition to fulfilling core competency areas required for addiction services, courses in this minor may meet the didactic education requirements for addiction credentialing, such as the Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) credential in Virginia.
Coaching Education (Minor)
Offers students with the interest in coaching in schools, private clubs, or collegiately an opportunity to explore the basics of coaching management, sports psychology, and complete a practical internship in their desired sport.
Exercise Science (Minor)
The Exercise Science Minor will provide additional training for students desiring to enter graduate or professional programs.
Fashion Merchandising (Minor)
Fashion merchandising involves wearing many hats within the fashion industry, sometimes juggling them and sometimes focusing on one area exclusively. The most important functions include product development, production, promoting the merchandise, and buying materials from suppliers. Apparel for men and women are the most common items that fashion merchandisers work with, but they also create and sell accessories, cosmetics, jewelry, and shoes. People in these roles typically work in the field of wholesale/retail or for a textile manufacturer.
Health & Wellness (Minor)
The Health and Wellness interdisciplinary minor explores personal involvement in and commitment to health and wellness and the factors that influence the health status of individuals and society.
Health Education (Minor)
Offers students with an interest in the health education field an opportunity to explore the core concepts of human growth and motor development, teaching health concepts, injury care, nutrition, and fitness.
Human Services (Minor)
With this minor, you will learn the roles and functions of the human services profession, characteristics of human growth and development; characteristics of human services agencies; theories and skills of human services and working with specialized populations.
Marketing Education (Minor)
Marketing education is a critical shortage teaching area in Virginia. Marketing educators teach a variety of marketing courses including marketing and management, fashion marketing, sports and entertainment marketing, travel and tourism, hotel/motel marketing, internet marketing, personal finance, and more.
Park, Recreation & Tourism Management (Minor)
The Minor in Park, Recreation, and Tourism Management prepares students for careers within public, nonprofit and commercial park, recreation and tourism agencies. Possible settings include hotels, municipal parks and recreation departments, outdoor outfitters and event planning organizations.
Special Education (Minor)
This minor is designed to complement majors in education, psychology, and speech pathology. It can be helpful if students intend to become special education teachers or speech language pathologists.
Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology (Minor)
This minor is designed to complement majors in education, psychology, and special education with the academic experiences needed to understand normal processes involved in speech, language, and hearing, identify communication disorders, and introduce students to clinical procedures for assessment and treatment of communication disorders.
Sport Management (Minor)
The minor in Sport Management is designed to provide students with a solid theoretical foundation in the study and practice of sport management. Students will achieve this goal by completing a series of five courses in the undergraduate sport management program.
The Impact of Technology (Interdisciplinary Minor)
This interdisciplinary minor develops a broader understanding of technology and its impact on individuals, societies, and the environment. It provides the social context and the historical and philosophical backgrounds needed by informed students to evaluate technology and its impacts. The minor equips students with skills to make better personal decisions about technology and more appropriate choices for their futures.
Therapeutic Recreation (Minor)
The Minor in Therapeutic Recreation provides students with a foundational knowledge of the field of therapeutic recreation and its populations served. This minor enhances students’ understanding of the use of leisure-based interventions to enhance the quality of life of individuals with disabilities.
Training & Development (Minor)
The Training and Development minor is offered to students majoring in disciplines (other than occupational and technical studies) who wish to enhance their content area of expertise and develop the knowledge and skills required to be an effective trainer in their respective disciplines and related fields.
